The Checkatrade figures come from jobs listed through its site and include a wide mix of system sizes, some with extras. The installer guide describes a more basic domestic system. The truth for most semis in Derby sits somewhere between the two, and moves with the things below.

What moves the price

Size of the system

More panels cost more, but not in a straight line, because the scaffold, inverter and electrical work are paid for once whatever the size. A slightly bigger system often costs little extra per panel.

Access and scaffolding

A two-storey semi with a clear drive is the easy case. Three-storey Victorian terraces, conservatories under the roof edge and narrow shared entries all make the scaffold bigger or harder to put up.

The shape of the roof

Chimneys, dormers, roof lights and valleys cut the space and can mean panels on two slopes, which needs more cabling and sometimes optimisers to handle shade.

The inverter

A standard inverter is the cheapest. A hybrid inverter costs more but lets a battery be added now or later without changing it again.

A battery

The biggest single add-on. In Derby the published range is £4,317 to £7,434, and it is usually cheaper to fit one with the panels than as a separate job later.

What a system saves on a Derby roof

PVGIS, the European Commission’s solar model, gives a south-facing roof in central Derby about 979 kWh a year for every kWp of panels, and an east or west-facing roof about 773 kWh (PVGIS).

Here is a worked example for a 4 kWp system on a south-facing roof:

  1. Generation: 4 × 979 = about 3,900 kWh a year.
  2. Suppose the household uses half of that as it’s made. That is about 1,950 kWh it no longer buys.
  3. At the East Midlands price cap of 25.36p per kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026 (Ofgem), that is worth about £495 a year.
  4. The other half is exported. What that earns depends on your export tariff, so it is left out here.

On those numbers alone, a system at the Checkatrade average of £9,831 would take about 20 years to pay back from bill savings, while one at the installer guide’s £5,500 to £7,500 would take roughly 11 to 15 years. Using more of the power at home, with a battery or by running appliances in the day, shortens that. So do export payments and any rise in electricity prices.

These are estimates, not promises. The solar panel calculator lets you change the size, direction and how much you use at home.

VAT and grants

Solar panels and batteries fitted in homes are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6). A quote should show 0% VAT on a home install until then.

For households on lower incomes, Derby City Council’s Warm Homes: Local Grant can pay for improvements including solar panels. It is for owner-occupied homes with an EPC of D to G and a household income of £36,000 or less, or in certain postcodes, and the council has £1.6m to spend (Derby City Council). Solar panel grants in Derby goes through what is real and what is an advert.

Getting a price you can trust

Compare quotes on the same basis: system size in kWp, panel and inverter make, whether a battery is included, scaffold, and the expected yearly generation. A quote that doesn’t state the expected generation, or that shows the same figure whatever way the roof faces, is worth questioning. Is this a good solar quote? has a line-by-line checklist, and if your street is in one of Derby’s 16 conservation areas, read the planning guide before you commit.

Bottom line

Published Derby figures put a typical installation somewhere between about £5,500 and £12,500, with the Checkatrade average at £9,831 and a battery adding around £4,300 to £7,400. Your roof, the scaffold and the system size decide where you land, which is why a survey comes before a firm price. Call 01332 919162, 9am to 7pm, 7 days.

Questions people also ask

Is solar cheaper if I add a battery at the same time?

Usually, because the survey, scaffold and electrical work are shared, and one hybrid inverter can run both. Adding a battery later is still possible, but some of that work gets paid for twice. Checkatrade's Derby figures for a battery on its own are £4,317 to £7,434.

Do I pay VAT on solar panels in Derby?

Not on a home install before 31 March 2027. HMRC applies a 0% rate to solar panels and batteries fitted in homes until then, including a battery added to existing panels. The zero rate is set to end on that date, so the timing of a quote matters.

Can I get solar panels free in Derby?

Some households can. Derby City Council's Warm Homes: Local Grant can fund up to £30,000 of improvements, including solar, for eligible owner-occupiers on lower incomes with an EPC of D to G. Most homeowners won't qualify. The grants guide explains who does.
