Why people ring

## The usual reasons for a call

- ### The bills won't come down

You like the idea of making your own electricity but want to know if your roof suits it and what a fair price looks like.

- ### Exporting most of it

The panels work, but with everyone out in the day most of the power goes to the grid for a few pence.

- ### A fault code on the inverter

The screen is blank or showing an error, the generation meter has stalled, and the original installer has gone.

- ### Pigeons have moved in

Nesting under the panels, droppings in the gutters and noise on the roof from spring onwards.

Derby specifics

## Solar on Derby’s houses

Derby is a city of semi-detached homes. The 2021 Census counted 39.1% of households in semis, 24.1% in detached houses and 21.8% in terraces, with only 12.2% in purpose-built flats ([Census 2021](https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/datasets/c2021ts044)). Much of that housing came in two waves. The railway works drove Victorian growth close to the centre, and the slum clearances of the 1920s and 1930s moved families out to new council estates in the suburbs, with private houses built alongside them.

For solar, that mix helps. A semi or a terrace usually has one long front slope and one long rear slope, so a system can often go on whichever faces nearer to south. When the best slope faces east or west, splitting panels across both still works well, because the power then comes in through the morning and the afternoon.

About 59.0% of Derby households own their home ([Census 2021](https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/datasets/c2021ts054)). If you rent, the landlord’s permission comes first, and since 27 August 2026 a small plug-in kit of up to 800W has been a legal option for flats and rented homes. The [plug-in solar guide](https://ecosolarpanelsderby.co.uk/guide/plug-in-solar-panels/) explains where one makes sense.

## Planning in the city

Most panels on Derby houses go ahead under permitted development, with no application. The rules change in two places. Listed buildings always need consent. And Derby City Council has 16 [conservation areas](https://www.derby.gov.uk/environment-and-planning/conservation/conservation-areas/), from Friar Gate and the Arboretum to Darley Abbey, Allestree and Mickleover. In several of them, including Allestree, Darley Abbey, Mickleover, Spondon and Strutts Park, the council has made [Article 4 directions](https://www.derby.gov.uk/environment-and-planning/planning/development-control/planning-constraints/) that take away some permitted development rights. Darley Abbey is also part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, which runs up the valley to Belper and beyond.

Panels can still be an option in those streets. The planning position just needs checking first, and we check it as standard before quoting. [Planning permission for solar panels in Derby](https://ecosolarpanelsderby.co.uk/guide/solar-panels-planning-permission-derby/) sets out how the checks work.

## Connecting to the grid

Every system in Derby joins the local network run by National Grid Electricity Distribution, the operator for the East Midlands. For a typical home system, the installer notifies the network within 28 days of switching it on under the [G98 process](https://connections.nationalgrid.co.uk/get-connected/solar-and-wind/micro-generation-single-g98). Bigger systems, and some batteries, need the network’s approval before they are connected. We handle the paperwork either way and send you a copy.

## The money side

Electricity under Ofgem’s price cap costs 25.36p per kWh in the East Midlands for 1 October to 31 December 2026 ([Ofgem](https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/your-energy-supply/your-energy-bill/energy-price-cap-unit-rates-and-standing-charges)). Every unit your panels supply is a unit you don’t buy at that price, which is why a battery or daytime use makes such a difference to the saving.

Two things help with the cost of fitting. Solar panels and batteries in homes carry [0% VAT until 31 March 2027](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-on-energy-saving-materials-and-heating-equipment-notice-7086). And Derby City Council runs the Warm Homes: Local Grant with YES Energy Solutions. It can pay for up to £30,000 of improvements, solar panels included, for owner-occupied homes with an EPC rating of D to G and a household income of £36,000 or less, or in certain postcodes ([Derby City Council](https://www.derby.gov.uk/environment-and-planning/climate-change/home-energy-advice/)). The pot is limited, so check eligibility with the council before you plan around it. [Solar panel grants in Derby](https://ecosolarpanelsderby.co.uk/guide/solar-panel-grants-derby/) sorts the real schemes from the adverts.

For a sense of scale, the Energy Saving Trust puts the average home system at 4.5 kWp and £7,600 to install, with panels lasting 25 years or more and the inverter needing replacement after about 12 ([Energy Saving Trust](https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/advice/solar-panels/)).

Questions

## Solar panel questions from Derby

### How much do solar panels cost in Derby?

Checkatrade puts a solar installation in Derby at £7,780 to £12,526, with £9,831 as the average. One Derby installer's own guide says most homes here land between £5,500 and £7,500. The gap is mostly system size and scaffolding. Home installs carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. [Solar panel costs in Derby](https://ecosolarpanelsderby.co.uk/guide/solar-panel-cost-derby/) goes through each source.

### How much power will panels make on a Derby roof?

PVGIS, the European Commission's solar model, puts a south-facing roof in Derby at about 979 kWh a year for every kWp of panels, and about 773 kWh if it faces east or west. So a 4 kWp system on a south slope makes roughly 3,900 kWh in an average year, with July at the top and December at the bottom.

### Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Derby?

Most Derby houses don't. Panels on a pitched roof are permitted development as long as they stick out no more than 0.2 metres and stay below the ridge. The exceptions are listed buildings and some homes in the city's 16 conservation areas, where Article 4 directions apply in places such as Allestree, Darley Abbey, Mickleover, Spondon and Strutts Park. [The Derby planning guide](https://ecosolarpanelsderby.co.uk/guide/solar-panels-planning-permission-derby/) covers each case.

### My Derby Homes property already has panels. Can you work on them?

No. Derby Homes has put panels on more than 900 council homes, and it asks tenants to report any damage straight to Derby Homes, whose repairs team and contractors look after the equipment. We work on privately owned systems, including those on former council homes that are now owner-occupied. [Derby Homes' solar panel page](https://www.derbyhomes.org/your-home/solar-panels/) has its guidance for tenants.

### Will you repair panels another company put in?

Yes, and it doesn't matter if the company that fitted them has closed. We find the fault first and give you a free written quote before any part is ordered. [Solar panel repair](https://ecosolarpanelsderby.co.uk/solar-panel-repair/) explains the visit.

### Can I call outside opening hours?

Lines are open every day from 9am to 7pm. If a panel, cable or inverter is smoking, sparking or smells of burning, stay clear of it and ring 999. A system that has simply stopped or is making less than usual is not an emergency, and a call the next morning is fine.
